The American author Bill Bryson, who lives in England,
is going to head a campaign to stop littering in Britain.
He calls the litter problem in Britain his number one passion.
He wants the campaign to challenge litter
louts by imposing hefty fines for people dropping
litter in the street. He also wants people to be fined for fly tipping,
the illegal dumping of waste large items by the side of the road.
Many local councils in the UK have started collecting
rubbish every fortnight instead of weekly.They say this will
encourage people to recycle more.
But Bryson is against this new system. He says that these fortnightly
collections will only increase rubbish.
He's also a great fan of the English countryside
and has become president of an organisation called
The Campaign to protect Rural England.
He says Britain has a glorious landscape and that it
should be preserved, and that rural environments in
many countries are at risk.
